Croydon has its own geography. Not the kind on maps — the kind you learn by delivering here.
There's the tennis club with its red clay courts, where the bounce is slower and the rallies go longer. The Aquahub beside the library, where swimmers and gym-goers cross paths in the carpark. The large park that gives the suburb room to breathe. And Croydon Main Street — a shopping town that hasn't forgotten what it's for.
We've delivered flowers to all of them.
Croydon Tennis Club
Red clay courts change the way you play. The ball sits up longer, you have more time to think, and the rallies become a conversation.
One Saturday morning, a coach received a bouquet from his players' parents. Native blooms, tied simply. The card said: "Ten years. Thank you."
He'd been coaching at the club for a decade. He didn't know they'd been counting.
The Aquahub
A delivery to the Aquahub carpark — a woman waiting by the library entrance, gym bag still over her shoulder.
Her daughter had sent flowers from interstate. The note said: "Happy birthday Mum. I know you'll be at the pool."
She was. She always is on Saturdays.
The Park
Some deliveries end at a park bench.
A man ordered a single bouquet of white roses. "Leave them at the bench near the big gum tree," the note said. "She'll know which one."
We don't always know the full story. But we leave the flowers where they're meant to go.
The Main Street Shop
Croydon Main Street has the feel of a shopping town that hasn't forgotten what it's for.
Not a mall. Not a strip of franchises.
Just shops, side by side, run by people who know their regulars.
We delivered once to a small gift shop halfway down the street. The owner had been there for eleven years. Her staff had pooled together to buy her flowers — nothing big, just a mixed seasonal bouquet — for the anniversary of the day she opened.
She put them on the counter.
"So customers know someone's celebrating today," she said.
Croydon is growing. But the small gestures haven't changed.
A bouquet for a coach who didn't know they'd been counting. Flowers for a mum who's always at the pool on Saturdays. Roses left at a bench near the big gum tree.
