To Bulleen with Flowers — For the Bend in the River

Take the Bulleen Road exit, past the freeway, toward the flats where the Yarra bends.
The houses here are mixed — 1960s brick, newer townhouses, the occasional original weatherboard. Sports fields stretch along the river. Families have been here for generations, or arrived last year.

We delivered to a house near the Bulleen Plaza last month. The note said: "For the new baby. From the mothers' group." The recipient wasn't expecting anyone — just home with a newborn, alone for the first time that week. She opened the door in her dressing gown, cried, then laughed. "They said they'd come over. They sent flowers instead. Same thing."
That's Bulleen. Community that shows up, even from a distance.

Another delivery stays with us: the Bulleen Tennis Club, after their clubhouse rebuild. They wanted something permanent — a dried flower arrangement in a ceramic vase, something that would last in the new space. We delivered it on a quiet weekday, placed it by the window overlooking the courts. The club president called later: "Feels like home now."
And then there are the ones you don’t forget.

A widower from a street behind the tennis club orders the same small white arrangement every month. Same instruction: "For my wife. Same spot."

We deliver to the cemetery along Manningham Road and leave it by the bench under the tree. The bench is always wiped clean before we arrive.

There are weeks when we deliver multiple sympathy arrangements across Bulleen — to family homes after a service, to small gatherings where relatives sit quietly with tea, to church halls where flowers stand beside framed photographs. Nothing extravagant. Mostly whites. Sometimes soft pastels. Always simple.

Bulleen holds its celebrations close.
But it also holds its goodbyes quietly.

Flowers here mark new babies, new beginnings — and the spaces left behind.
