Jess Lemon’s Wedding Flowers: A Garden Ceremony Shaped by Nature

Every wedding venue has its own character. For Jess Lemon’s garden wedding, Flowerland created a floral installation that reflected the bride’s love of red flowers and her particular fondness for hanging amaranthus.

Outdoor floral styling involves more than choosing flowers and colours. The setting, temperature and weather conditions all influence how a design comes together. With the couple entrusting us with the creative decisions, we were able to shape the installation around their preferences and the character of the venue.

Creating an Asymmetrical Floral Frame

The installation was built around two stands of different heights, creating an asymmetrical floral frame against the dark iron structure. Hanging amaranthus softened the strong lines of the metalwork, while contrasting flower colours added depth and character.

With the ceremony scheduled for 4 pm, we arrived several hours earlier to prepare the installation. The flowers needed to remain in good condition throughout the preparation and leading up to the ceremony, making careful handling an important part of the process.

Adapting the Flowers to the Conditions

The day was hot, and some foliage began drying faster than expected. We kept the stems in buckets of water during preparation, thoroughly soaked the floral foam before securing it to the stands, and then began arranging the flowers.

Our original design direction leaned more heavily towards red. However, as we worked on site, we adjusted the amount of foliage and incorporated additional flowers in response to the conditions. This shifted the balance of the final colour palette, resulting in an arrangement that was less heavily red than originally planned.

The hanging amaranthus remained an essential feature throughout, preserving one of the elements the bride loved most about the design.

Building for the Outdoor Setting

The garden was also exposed to periods of strong wind. After securing the stands, we used bricks to help stabilise the setup and continued checking the installation as the gusts passed through.

We also adjusted the distribution of the flowers, adding more through the middle and lower sections to develop the overall shape and visual balance. Each decision considered both the appearance of the installation and the practical demands of working outdoors.

The finished arrangement was not simply a reproduction of the original idea. It evolved through a series of decisions made on site, responding to the flowers, the weather and the venue while retaining the elements that mattered most to the bride.
